Our Mission
The mission of the University Library is to provide materials in support of the teaching and learning process in the main stream and the distance learning components. The Library takes it as a duty to:

  • Provide materials to meet the requirements of faculty, postgraduate students and researchers.
  • Provide materials to support Library users in their own personal development.
  • Participate in a cooperative arrangement with a view to developing a network of academic library resources which can be put at the disposal of all bona fide library users.
  • Meet the specialized information needs of the community in which the University is situated.

Reference Unit
This unit provides materials that are for reference purposes only. Materials in this unit are not to be borrowed but just for consultation purpose. The duties of the unit include assistance to readers in using library tools, resources and facilities Help with literature searches and answering reference enquiries Assist users with Electronic Resources and Houses all past questions.

Reserve or Short Term Loan Unit
This unit houses materials that are of rare, high demand, limited in number or recommended by lecturers. The books are loaned out to users on hourly bases. It also takes statistics of total number of users.

Serials Units
Various journals subscribed to by the library are selected, ordered, received processed and shelved by the serials unit.
Functions of serials unit includes:­

  • Houses all past issues of journals in classified order
  • Current issues of journals are displayed
  • Retrieval of journals
  • Houses government documents, theses Newspapers (old and new).

Collection Development

This unit handles all recommendations of books for purchases. It order and receive order from suppliers. Process all the book invoices for settling the payments. The unit is charged with the responsibilities of selecting the materials, carrying out the bibliographic data checking, checking the stock of the library to avoid duplication of library materials received on requests, checking details of the materials against the details on the order slip and processing the materials.
Main Functions of Collection Development are:­

  • Selections of books and monographic series for ordering
  • Receiving request from faculties and library staff
  • Bibliographic checking
  • Ordering books, Monographic series not on standing order and other library materials.
  • Receiving books and other library materials from booksellers, documents units, gift and exchange unit.
  • Serials recording and theses unit for accessioning
  • Filling of on-order and in-process cards
  • Clearing invoices for payments
  • Routing library materials to appropriate units
  • Conducting regular surveys of the collection to determine the adequacy or gaps in conjunction with the coordinator of acquisitions
  • Work with faculty members and the library senior staff
  • Compilation of necessary statistics
  • Maintaining accession register
  • Donation of books to schools - Primary, secondary and tertiary institution

Technical Services Division
Technical services division is the division which catalogue and classifies library materials. The unit organizes the materials into a set pattern of classes. This unit maintain and provide catalogue cards which are arranged in the catalogue cabinet. Each card in the catalogue represents a book in the library.
